About the Wireless Network

What is a wireless network?

A wireless network allows you to connect your computer to a network using radio waves instead of wires. As long as you are within range of a wireless access point, you can move your computer from place to place while maintaining untethered access to networked resources. The Mount Zion wireless network and other wireless networks conforming to the 802.11b standard operate at 11 Mbps, roughly the same speed as a conventional Ethernet connection.

Is it secure?

All wireless transmissions are vulnerable to eavesdropping unless they are encrypted. The Mount Zion wireless network is secured through use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) which encrypts all wireless transmissions, including login names and passwords.

How do I connect to the wireless network?

1. Make sure that your computer has built-in wireless support or a wireless card. Computers that do not already incorporate wireless network support require a wireless network adapter card that typically plugs into your computer's PCMCIA slot.

Both our wireless network and our VPN use Wi-Fi technology; if you need to purchase a card we recommend LinkSys Wireless LAN cards.

2. Use SSID 777. If you are familiar with wireless settings, simply add in the SSID for the Mount Zion wireless network, which is: 777. If you would like more detailed instructions, please click on the appropriate link below.

Where can I access MZ's wireless network?

Mount Zion continues to extend its secure wireless network, currently available at many Mount Zion Campus locations including:

  • Computer Labs
  • Main Library
  • Administrative Office
  • Microwave Lab
  • Electronics Lab
  • Conference Hall
  • Seminar Hall

Are personal wireless access points (WAPs) allowed in the residence halls?

No. Because they can assign network addresses that conflict and interfere with existing MZ addresses, wireless access points that are not installed and managed by the MATRIX are prohibited in the residence halls.

Where can I get help?

The MATRIX team is committed to the support of this service and to working with you to resolve any issues that may arise. Please direct questions regarding the wireless network or the VPN to the MATRIX.
